Ashwin’s Address to Madurai: A Vision for Cricket’s Future
It was an evening filled with nostalgia, inspiration, and cricketing passion as the Madurai District Cricket Association (MDCA) celebrated its 65th Annual Day with a grand event at the M.P Mahal here at Madurai. Gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest was Indian Cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin (Padma Shri), who captivated the audience with his insights, experiences, and vision for the future of cricket in both Tamil Nadu and Madurai. Adding to the prestige of the gathering were some of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent cricket administrators, K.S. Viswanathan – CEO, Chennai Super Kings, R.I. Palani – Hon. Secretary, TNCA and Dr. R.N. Baba – Hon. Asst. Secretary, TNCA.
ASHWIN'S THOUGHT-PROVOKING ADDRESS
Ashwin narrated a story of passion, perseverance, and the sheer joy of the game. With his characteristic depth and clarity, he delivered a speech that left the audience with invaluable lessons, not just about cricket but about life and more.![]() |

Right at the outser, Ashwin paid tribute to K.S. Viswanathan, acknowledging him as the "man behind the success stories of many cricketers." Drawing a parallel from cinema, he likened Viswanathan’s role to that of legendary filmmakers K. Balachander and Shankar, who shaped the careers of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, respectively. He emphasized that while cricketers gain the limelight, it is the tireless work of mentors and administrators like Kasi Viswanathan that paves the way for their success. He also recalled the 1960s era of Tamil Nadu cricket, when stalwarts like N. Srinivasan (former ICC Chairman and BCCI President), D Natarajan (former TNCA bureaucrat and Secretary, up until 2012), and Kasi Viswanathan were the backbone of cricket’s development in the region.
A Symbolic Question and a Young Lad’s Answer
Ashwin began his speech by posing a simple yet thought provoking question to the young players:
"Why is there a fish symbol in the MDCA logo?" Amid murmurs, a young boy stood up and confidently answered: "The fish represents the Pandyan kings, who had it as their emblem. Also, Goddess Meenakshi, the deity of Madurai, is called ‘Meenakshi’ because her eyes resemble that of a fish." Ashwin was impressed, emphasizing how important it is for players to know their roots and history, just as they know their game.

Memories That Matter
Ashwin shared a deeply personal perspective on what truly remains in a cricketer’s heart. Despite achieving over 450 Test wickets, he confessed that the records do not define him. Instead, the most cherished memories are the struggles and experiences that led him to where he is today—like riding on his father’s motorcycle to matches. This served as a reminder to young cricketers that success is not just about milestones but about the journey and the lessons learned along the way.
Advice to Young Cricketers and Parents
Ashwin had a strong message for both young cricketers and their parents:
"Enjoy the game instead of treating it as a burden."
"Avoid distractions like social media and focus on your skills."
"Wait for your true calling in cricket, success will come with patience."
The Inspiring Journey of Sharath

While talking about district cricket, Ashwin narrated the remarkable story of Sharath, a cricketer from a small village in Tiruchi, whose life changed overnight. Initially, Sharath was a bowling coach at a local academy. However, life changed when one of talent scouts saw a six that he had hit in the S.S. Rajan Trophy, catching Ashwin’s attention. Though Sharath identified as a specialist bowler, Ashwin saw hidden batting potential in him. Despite initial reluctance, Sharath took up the challenge. To everyone's surprise, he emerged as a standout middle-order batsman, eventually becoming one of the highest run-getters in TNPL. This writer had the privilege of meeting Sharath during his stay at a hotel in Dindigul. This writer still recalls how Sharath’s brilliant catches in the TNPL qualifiers and finals helped his team to victory.
The Disconnect Between Players and the Game
Ashwin also highlighted a concerning trend among modern cricketers:
Many players, after reaching a certain level, lose their deep connection with the game.
Some simply chase achievements and records, without fully understanding the beauty and essence of cricket.
Once they are done with palying for the day, they think, "That's it, now I can enjoy life," rather than continuing to grow and contribute to the sport.
His words were a reminder to young players that cricket is not just about the numbers, but about continuous learning.
Applauding TNCA’s Satellite Centers
In an encouraging move, Ashwin applauded the emergence of TNCA’s satellite centers across four districts, recognizing them as key hubs for nurturing young talent. He emphasized that such initiatives would bring structured coaching, better facilities, and greater opportunities to aspiring cricketers in smaller towns, helping Tamil Nadu cricket thrive at the grassroots level. It is worthy to note that the satellite center will be operational in Madurai by next week. P Ashok Sigamani, TNCA president has consented to inaugurate the center in Madura College.

"P Dogg kettadhadha sollunga!"
As Ashwin stepped off the podium, a few boys started chanting, "PDogg kettadhadha sollunga!" What started as a playful shout soon became a reminder of the great reach of Pdogg’s YouTube presence. For those who arent aware, Prasanna is feverely active on YouTube(and other Social Media platforms); he frequently appears on Ashwin's channel and also runs his own channel where he shares insights alongside Dr. Karthikeyan IAS.
PDogg was instrumental in bringing talents like Shamar Joseph ( and many more) into the cricketing radar, helped numerous cricketing legends elevate their game, helping shape strategies for various cricket teams, and making crucial behind-the-scenes contributions that often go unnoticed.
The chants didn’t stop, they followed Ashwin all the way to his car, making RN Baba burst into laughter with a smile. It was a perfect moment that highlighted how much PDogg has influenced the cricketing spark among all age groups, especially young boys. This writer feels Prassana's delivery and the emotions he brings in are little things that makes him feel more connected. His delivery, tone and body language seems amicable, and his choice of words are to be well appreciated. Among the youngsters, It would be nothing short of surprise, if he gets a cult following, similar to popular Kollywood actors.
